Big Issue Group

With 3.8 million people in the UK experiencing destitution, we create opportunities and solutions for people to work, earn, learn and thrive.

Who We Are

Big Issue Group was founded in 1991 with a simple but radical idea: to give people experiencing homelessness a hand-up, not a handout. What began as a magazine created to help people earn an income with dignity has grown into one of the UK’s most respected and impactful social enterprises.

Today, we’re a mission-driven Group and a certified B Corp, united by a commitment to ending poverty and creating opportunities for people to work, earn, learn and thrive. Our foundations remain the same as they were in 1991 - practical solutions, human connection, and belief in people’s potential. But our work now stretches far beyond the magazine, reaching communities across the UK through an expanded, collaborative network of social businesses.

Our Vision

A world that works for everyone.

Our Mission

To dismantle poverty through social business solutions.

Services

Big Issue is made up of five services:

Our award-winning journalism and campaigning that champions positive solutions to end poverty in the UK. Our journalism is delivered through our magazine, website and app, supporting vendors to change their lives.

Our inclusive recruitment service that works with employers to support people affected by poverty and struggling to get a job, to move into long-term employment.

Our investment service that funds other social enterprises, social-purpose businesses and charities working to end poverty and inequality in the UK.

Our impact advisory service that supports other businesses to deliver impact and achieve their ESG goals.

Through our frontline service team, we support nearly 4,000 individuals every year to become economically active and provide access to basic services, support, training and employment to improve their lives.

What We Do

At Big Issue Group, we create solutions that help people lift themselves out of poverty for good.

We bring together Big Issue Media, Big Issue Invest, Big Issue Recruit, and our wider Impact and Support services - each playing a crucial role in tackling the root causes of poverty. Together, we deliver impact across five core pillars: Learning & Employment, Housing, Health & Wellbeing, Environment & Community, and Financial & Digital Inclusion.

These pillars shape everything we do. They guide the stories we tell in our journalism. They inform the tailored support we give Big Issue vendors and the pathways we build for Big Issue Recruit candidates. They underpin the social investments we facilitate through Big Issue Invest. And they drive our campaigning work to shift policy and challenge the systems that keep people trapped in poverty.

Our approach goes beyond short-term fixes. We focus on long-lasting, systemic change - backing local leaders, strengthening communities and championing sustainable solutions that deliver real impact, today and for future generations.

Our Values

Our values guide every decision we make and every relationship we build. They reflect who we are, what we stand for and how we show up for each other, for our vendors and candidates, and for communities across the UK. They are the principles that keep us focused on creating long-lasting change and a world that works for everyone.

We believe in a fair, open and inclusive world and treat everyone with respect.

We believe in open and honest communication and team work to allow people and ideas to thrive.

We are quick to respond to changing circumstances to deliver solutions that drive positive change for ourselves, those we serve and for future generations.

We are passionate about empowering people to design and create opportunities to drive change and growth for themselves and others.

Our Benefits

Claim money towards the costs of a wide range of treatments for yourself and up to 4 dependants.

On your pension, cycle to work and nursery.

We fully embrace the benefits flexible working has on employee wellbeing.

Providing a range of wellbeing service including legal, health and childcare.

A tailored onboarding programme and training to support you at each stage of your role.

Big Issue Group has always given me opportunity to grow and develop my career. From joining the organisation as a Frontline vendor support worker, to now leading on how we measure and report our social impact as Group Impact Director, I have always had the chance to challenge myself and learn new skills, all in support of a mission I deeply care about.

- RC-M, Group Impact Director

I’m proud to work at Big Issue Recruit, where we create real social impact by helping people overcome barriers to sustainable employment. I support individuals from diverse backgrounds into roles with ethical employers, providing tailored coaching and ongoing support to address barriers, build confidence, skills and most importantly, secure roles.

- SD , Job Coach

As a Big Issue vendor and now a Support Worker in the London office, it’s a pleasure to work alongside friendly colleagues who are flexible, pragmatic and always professional. The frontline team brings practical, level-headed solutions, delivered with real empathy and understanding. Big Issue is an inclusive and supportive place to work, one that believes in people, backs them, and helps them grow
